WORDS WITH JOHN MIKEL OBI

Mikel Chelsea
Actions speak louder than words, so the saying goes. However, an analysis of John Mikel Obi's 300 Chelsea appearances is perhaps best illustrated by those who have worked closest with him during that time - his managers, team-mates and coaches. They have overseen his progress from the highly talented 18-year-old that arrived in west London in the summer of 2006, to the strong, tactically astute defensive midfielder whose best performances have often come when it's mattered most.

According to Jose MourinhoMikel is 'a genius in his position', to the extent it is 'a miracle if he loses the ball'. The Portuguese, who signed the Nigerian seven-and-a-half years ago and is now managing him again, is not alone when it comes to those who have sung Mikel's praises since he moved to west London.

Luiz Felipe Scolari said 'he belongs in the position'. Carlo Ancelotti likened Mikel's style to his own, a compliment not to be taken lightly considering the Italian's own glittering playing career. Ray Wilkins, a lieutenant of both Ancelotti's and Guus Hiddink's before that, and an exceptional former midfielder himself, hailed Mikel as a player who 'reads the game exceptionally well, is as strong as an ox and has a lovely range of passing'. Andre Villas-Boas admired his 'amazing mental toughness' when he played on despite the abduction of his father in Nigeria, and, following our epic run to the Champions League final in 2012, Roberto Di Matteo stressed the significance of the 'vital' role he played throughout the latter stages of that glorious European campaign, highlighting disciplined defensive performances against Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Considering these endorsements, it is little surprise Mikel has reached 300 games in Chelsea blue, averaging almost exactly 40 appearances a season. Yet the rough diamond that signed in 2006 joined a midfield that already contained Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien, arguably the most fearsome in world football at that time, especially with Michael Ballack joining too. Asked to cast his mind back to those early days at the club, Mikelsays it was a daunting but invaluable experience.

'Coming into a big club like Chelsea, as a young 18-year-old from Africa, it was a dream come true,' he reflects.

'I remember coming into the dressing room and I was shaking all through the first week. The players in there really helped me settle in - John TerryFrank LampardDidier Drogba and the other African players that were there at the time.

'I looked at these guys every day and I learned a lot from them, how they act on and off the football pitch, which helped me develop and mature as a person. It was a growing up stage which I never had with any other team. I just jumped straight into this team so I had to learn that way.'

Mikel's learning curve was occasionally stunted by disciplinary problems, on and off the pitch, including four red cards in his first 18 months at the club. Looking back, he concedes he was at times 'naïve and stupid', but, as he puts it, 'it's all about growing up in the game, and I think over the years I've done that'. The evidence supports him, too - his last sending off was over six years ago, and for a man deployed in a highly competitive area of the pitch, he gets relatively few yellow cards now.

As the discussion turns to his style of play, the subject of Makelele comes up. The Frenchman was so imperious in that defensive midfield role he subsequently had the position named after him. No easy act to follow, then.

'I learned a lot from Maka, he was always helpful,' Mikel points out. 'I watched him play a lot because I knew that was the position Jose wanted me to play in. Everyone has their own style of play and I do play a bit differently to him because I know I can contribute more offensively, but at the same time I try to keep the shape of the team which is important.
Mikel Chelsea

'Of course I want to score but at the same time not all 11 players can score, you have people there to keep the shape of the team. If I'm playing with Frank he is always going forward. If both of us go it's a disaster, likewise with Rami, he's a box-to-box player. I have to make sure I sit, and if we keep a clean sheet and we win then I'm very happy.'

Lampard, so often fielded next to Mikel over the years, in either a three-man or a two-man central Chelsea midfield, is well-placed to judge the Nigerian's assets.

'It's very good playing alongside Obi,' he tells the official Chelsea website. 'He's a top holding midfield player, and for me personally being more attacking in my game it helps to play with someone who has discipline and moves the ball quickly, which Obi can do.
Mikel Chelsea

'He's one of those players that will not make headlines, but he's happy to go unrecognised in his work and he has a huge worth for the team when he plays.'

That worth has helped us to domestic and European triumphs in recent years. Mikel cites our Double-winning campaign under Ancelotti as perhaps his most memorable season so far, but asked to pick his best performance for Chelsea, it is 'without a shadow of a doubt' the one he produced in Munich, the night of our greatest ever triumph.

'Sometimes when you come into big games like that you need players to step up, and I think the whole team did. Everyone played very well. It was a great team performance, we knew how tough it was going to be playing in their stadium but we defended well and when we had to play we did that as well.

'Munich has topped up my Chelsea career, because that trophy was the one the club have always wanted to win, and doing it was brilliant. It was the special one.'
Mikel Chelsea

And so, on FA Cup third round duty at Derby, Mikel walked onto the pitch for the 300th time as a Chelsea player, joining Petr CechDidier Drogba and Gianfranco Zola as our foreign players to reach that milestone. Following the 2-0 win, which included Mikel's first headed goal for the club, the players went to applaud the travelling Chelsea supporters. It was Mikel's name that rang around the iPro Stadium, recognition not just for his goal on the day but for the great service he has given the club.

'I have always appreciated the Chelsea fans, they've been amazing. They're always there to support the team week in, week out, which just shows how brilliant they are,' Mikel stresses, before finishing our interview with a summary of his time at Stamford Bridge past, present and future.

'It's been an amazing journey. I've enjoyed every bit of it,' he smiles. 'I've worked with some great people, great players from when I came to the ones that are here now. They've all been brilliant.

'I've won a lot of trophies with this team, but I'm still hungry to keep winning more. I'm very happy, I enjoy what I do, coming to the training ground every day, spending time with my team-mates. I hope there are many more years to come.'

Taking into account the opinions of so many who have watched him, played with him and managed him since he joined Chelsea, he is surely not alone in that desire.

Luiz May Be Kissing The Bridge Bye If Barca Step Up

Will Luiz be on his way to Barcelona?

La Liga champions Barcelona remain keen on signing Chelsea defender David Luiz - although only a bid of around €35m will tempt the Blues into selling the Brazil international, according to MARCA.
The Catalan giants attempted to sign Luiz last summer, but their €25m offer was rejected by the Premier League outfit.
However, reports suggest that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would consider selling the versatile defender if Barcelona meet his valuation of the player.
Barcelona fear that Luiz's value will rise after the 2014 World Cups finals in Brazil, and are subsequently keen to wrap up a deal before the start of the tournament.
The team's current head coach Gerardo Martino - who, if rumours are to be believed, may not be in charge at the Camp Nou for the start of the 2014/15 campaign - is on the look out for a long-term successor for Carles Puyol, who appears to be coming towards the end of his career.

Mourihno's Verdict On The Hull-City Game

Mourinho Chelsea

Jose Mourinho is delighted with the direction his Chelsea side are heading in, reserving particular praise for his two goalscorers at the KC stadium this afternoon.
An even opening period ended goalless, with Yannick Sagbo and Oscar both feeling they should have scored the game's opening goal. We didn't panic, though, and an improved Chelsea performance in the second half, like at Southampton and Derby, was capped by a spectacular Eden Hazard strike - the Belgian on top form yet again - and a sweet Fernando Torres finish.
Top of the league, five wins out of six in all competitions and with just one goal conceded in that time, Jose Mourinhowas understandably a happy man…
'It was another good performance - very stable, very calm,' said Mourinho. 'In the first half they controlled us very well and defended well. They changed their system to adapt to us: they pressed a lot, they were compact, so we couldn't create a lot of chances, but we didn't open up too much or get frustrated.
'We never lost our balance, we kept our shape tactically, and we didn't give them opportunities to score. In the second half when we had a little bit more of the ball we intensified the game and recovered the ball higher, so I think normally the tendency would be for a goal.
'After that goal I was happy because we were in control, we didn't go to defend. We controlled the game well, and I think the second goal for us was more likely than a goal for them, and when we scored the second goal it was game over.'
Hazard's goal, and overall performance, caught the eye again.
'He is playing very well for a long time. The club made a big investment in him last year because they trust him a lot. He is more than just a talented kid now. He feels and accepts the responsibility, accepts that a team player is more than a talented player.
'Without losing his fantastic ability he is giving us other things. The kid is in a very good moment of his career with three consecutive man of the matches. Let's see if the Barclays Premier League decide to give him a player of the month, because the kid is waiting and the trophy is not arriving. Maybe they don't like to go to Cobham!'
The victory moves us top of the table, at least until Manchester City's game at Newcastle tomorrow.'It's important because it helps the players to be better and stronger and to grow up faster. To play under pressure, when you're near the top of the league like we are, is good.
'All the players are stable in their performances, the younger players are improving a lot and the team is getting better, so that's a consequence of the work everyone is doing.
'Do we like to be leaders? Yes, we like, but maybe tomorrow we are second and maybe Monday we are third. The important thing is that we all know we are going in the right direction.'
A Chelsea striker scored for the third league game running.
'Our strikers, without being the top scorers, are all giving us important things. They are working hard for the team. In the last matches goals are coming a little bit more, but the way they work for the team is always there. Fernando did what we wanted him to do: press central defenders, hold the ball up, wait for support, get behind the defenders where he is powerful, and score an important goal.
On how our supporters have always got behind our players.
'The players never feel the heat when things are not going well for them. Chelsea fans are like this. I remember when we had (Mateja) Kezman, he scored his first goal in December, and all the fans were supporting him; it is Chelsea fan's nature which really helps the players, especially in the difficult periods. Special fans, special club.'
Like on the opening day of the season, Hull were beaten by a 2-0 scoreline.
'Hull are good enough to stay up. They have a very good manager, big evolution in the team since the first game of the season, they are more than comfortable playing at this level.
'They don't stay in the Premier League by beating Chelsea, they stay by beating Norwich and Fulham and the teams that compete with them directly.'
Mourinho gave a half-term report on his team, marked out of 10.
'We could do better because we lost some points that we shouldn't have, but it could also be worse. Not a five, not a 10. Seven, seven-and-a-half, eight - around there.
'I think things come naturally, step by step. They know that next year we are going to be better. Winning or not winning, you have to be on top of your responsibility's every day. They are doing well, they are enjoying it and now, let's see how it ends.'
Steve Bruce admitted his side couldn't maintain their level of performance, which eventually proved costly…
'First half we did okay but in the second half we didn't keep the ball well enough,' said the Hull manager.
'Hazard was for me the best player on the pitch. He scored a wonder goal and after that it became a very difficult afternoon, it became stretched and open and their top players had more space to show their quality.'

Manchester City Close In On Golden Eaglet's Yahaya

Manchester City close in on 'Nigerian Neymar' Yahaya

Manchester City are poised to secure a deal for Nigeria under-17 star Musa Yahaya
Yahaya scored four times in seven matches at the U-17 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates, with Nigeria beating Mexico 3-0 in the final to win the tournament.

Dubbed the 'Nigerian Neymar', Yahaya had been tracked by Tottenham, as well as teams in Portugal and Spain, but City appear to have won the race for the 16-year-old and are in deep discussions with the player's agent, Babawo Mohammed.

The attacking midfielder, who plays at the Mutunchi Academy in his homeland, would become the third member of the African nation's junior team to join City and is keen to link up with his international team-mates at the Etihad Stadium.
Yahaya, who describes Andres Iniesta as his footballing hero and has admitted he wants to play for Real Madrid, has remained coy over his immediate future in recent months.

"I am not going to talk on that one [where he wants to move], I have a manager in Babawo Mohammed. I have left that for him to handle. He knows me and knows what is good for me," he told MTNFootball in November.
Striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who won the Golden Ball at the U-17 World Cup after picking up six goals and seven assists, signed a pre-contract agreement with Manuel Pellegrini's side on Friday and will join when he turns 18 in October.

Chidi Nwakali, meanwhile, is also on the verge of signing for the club after arriving for talks last week, with City opening their state-of-the-art Etihad Campus training facility in August

Manchester City May Be Title favourites

Arsenal have been touted to win the Premier League title this year over rivals Manchester City, this is going to be easier said than done.
City have a notably better squad and the 6-3 thrashing of the Gunners shows they have the talent to dismantle their main rivals.
Here are some other factors as to why Manchester City are set for the title:
1 - Squad depth
Arsenal have lost several key players this season, which can only spell doom for them. Currently they are without Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Abou Diaby, Yaya Sonago, Aaron Ramsey, Nickolas Bendtner, Theo Walcott, and Kieran Gibbs.
All of these players are first team players. Arsenal are also notably weak in the defence as they only have three first team centre-backs in Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscienly, and Per Mertesacker. On the other hand, City have three strikers to choose from as well as four central backs - the injuries could be costly for Arsenal in the long run.
2 - Striker reliability
Olivier Giroud, Arsenal's only notable striker has found the net eight times so far. However, he is no match for City's Sergio Aguero who has scored 13 and Alvaro Negredo who has seven goals. The lack of goals will be another problem for current leaders Arsenal.
3 - Other competition
Both of these clubs have had different results against other big six members; Manchester City have managed to beat Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham, while drawing with Chelsea.
Arsenal on the other hand, has suffered defeat at the hands of United, City, Liverpool, though they did manage to beat Tottenham and draw with Chelsea. The Gunners have accumulated four points out of a possible 15, while City took 13 from 15.
Predicted Top 10:
1. Manchester City
2. Chelsea
3. Arsenal
4. Liverpool
5. Tottenham
6. Everton
7. Manchester United
8. Newcastle
9. Southampton
10. Hull City
Relegated: Fulham, Crystal Palace, Sunderland

Why Chelsea May Win The EPL

Having seen Chelsea's consummate and confident performance against Hull City this afternoon, there will undoubtedly be some alarm bells ringing in Manchester and North London.
Chelsea dispatched Hulls with relative ease, putting on an efficient show of organised defending and lethal counter-attacking. Goals from the in-form Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres secured a 2-0 win for the Blues and Mourinho praised their 'solid'performance.
This makes it five wins on the trot for the special one's side and they now sit top the Premier League for the first time since September.
Admittedly, Manchester City and Arsenal have yet to play their respective games but the signs are increasingly promising for Chelsea.
Hazard has been in spectacular form over the past few months and that continued today, bringing his goal tally for the season to 11 with the opener at the KC Stadium.
He is starting to mature into the player Mourinho probed for back in August and his recent commitment to Chelsea should appease worried Blues fans. His continued form could well hold the key to the teams prolonged success.
One goal conceded in six games is a record not to be sniffed at either, with the central defensive partnership of Gary Cahill and John Terry proving critical to that new-found stability.
Cahill has bloomed under Mourinho and, although Terry remains the natural leader in the team, there is a growing confidence about the 28-year-old's play.
Cesar Azpilicueta looks like Ashley Cole's natural replacement at left-back and his foraging runs from deep provide additional width for Chelsea to exploit.
David Luiz was deployed in the midfield holding role for the second time this season earlier today and, once again, looked imperious.
His ability to pick a pass is wasted in defence and many Chelsea fans see him as a successor to Frank Lampard. He can run, pass and shoot with the ball, making him a versatile pivot to utilize in the middle of the park.
It is now up to the Brazilian to convince Mourinho that he can be the new Claude Makelele.
Torres looks sharp, with his goal today making it three from four starts in the Premier League.
For all the talk of signing a new striker, Torres looks like a man revitalised under Mourinho. His hold up play is improving and the Spaniard seems confident that he is the number one striker.
Chelsea will still need to buy a striker, either in January or the summer, but they must not forget that they have a very capable goalscorer already on their hands.
These factors are, arguably, the most potent weapons Chelsea have at their disposal. Mourinho is playing a very clever game, understating the clubs aims for the season and removing all the pressure from the players.
Chelsea march on in the hunt for the title with a huge game at home to Manchester United next weekend. Should they beat the champions, it would be foolish to bet against them for the Premier League crown despite City and Arsenal's strong starts.

Mata May Prove Mourihno A Joker

The 25-year-old Spaniard has being forced to watch matches from the sidelines as an unused substitute as goal-scorers Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres took care of business to move the Blues to the top of the table.
As Chelsea climb the Premier League ladder and compete with Manchester City and Arsenal for the title, many believe that Mourinho has been right all along: maybe Chelsea don't need their number 10 any longer.
So what is to be done about Chelsea's forgotten back-to-back player of the year? How should Mourinho deal with his incredibly talented attacking midfielder who has undoubtedly been the spark of Chelsea's offence since his transfer from Valencia in the summer of 2011?
It's quite simple, really. Include him.
If you're to tell me that two players as talented as Mata and Hazard cannot play together in beautiful football harmony, that's just foolish. Mata has always been effective from either wing, a highly valued position in Mourinho's strategical formation. and why bench a player that can both score and distribute at a high pace from a wide position? It simply doesn't compute.
Mourinho has said time and time again that Hazard has a guaranteed spot on the left wing for as long as he is lucky enough to manage him, and there's no arguing there. The 23-year-old Belgian has easily been Chelsea's best player this year, leading the team in both Premier League goals (9) and (5).
Oscar is playing very well through the center and is pressuring opposing back-lines like a possessed maniac, much to the delight of his manager. Willian has come into his own in the side, and Schurrle has proved all year that he deserves a real role in this team.
But where will they be come the middle of March? When the season starts to wear on their bodies and the numerous competitions start to pile up (providing they take care of Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16)?
I'd like to have the man that has brought set-piece mastery, blazing speed, and selfless decisions to the pitch for the last two and a half years on my starting eleven.
After 135 appearances for Chelsea, Mata has 33 goals and 58 assists. In terms of age, he is in the prime of his career, a perfect balance between experience and a youthful cunning.
Mata can fit anywhere in any formation, from right mid to in behind the striker in a traditional number ten role, which makes him that much more valuable to a club with a recent history of counter-attacking. He's the ultimate flexible midfielder, and can ideally fit in any offensive scheme that Mourinho decides to go with, whether it be a one, two or three forward set.
Ultimately, from a Chelsea supporter's point of view, it would be a real shame, and frankly a waste, to see the fan-favorite leave Stamford Bridge this January.
