Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby believes the signing of Mamadou Sakho could mean Martin Skrtel's days at Anfield are numbered.
Speaking in his Liverpool Echo column, Molby claimed that spending £18million on the PSG defender can only mean one thing: he is being primed for the the starting XI.
The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Ligue 1 champions, but was forced to look elsewhere for regular playing time after the big-money acquisitions of defenders such as Brazilians Marquinhos and Thiago Silva.
Liverpool swooped and snapped up the France international with young Portuguese defender Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon for a combined £25million - another move Molby questioned.
The three-time English league champion was puzzled at the deadline day signing of two defenders when Liverpool has kept three clean sheets in their first three Premier League matches, surmising that it could only mean bad news for one or two of the clubs other stoppers.
"When you kick off the season with three successive clean sheets, it’s a little bit surprising to see two centre-backs added to the squad on transfer deadline day!" he said.
"But Mamadou Sakho and Thiago Ilori can be excellent acquisitions for the club – even if they do pose questions about the long-term prospects of Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure.
"Given the size of his transfer fee Sakho has clearly been bought with the first team in mind.
