Samuel Eto'o would have moved to the lucrative leagues in Qatar this summer - had Chelsea not been successful in luring the striker to Stamford Bridge.
In the end, a reunion with Jose Mourinho proved too good an opportunity to miss and at 32 years of age, Eto'o will finally get the chance to test himself in one of the most competitive league's in the world - the Premier League.
But Eto'o's agent, Claudio Vigorelli, has revealed that Chelsea faced stiff competition for the Cameroonian's signature with former club Inter Milan interested, while a move to Qatar was also a genuine option for the powerful frontman.
And Vigorelli acknowledged that the Nerazzurri had contacted him about bringing Eto'o back to the San Siro, though they failed to firm up their interest, allowing Mourinho to jump to the head of the queue.
"Inter were never concrete", Vigorelli told Tuttosport. "If Samuel had not signed a contract with Chelsea, he probably would have accepted a very lucrative offer from Qatar.
"But Jose Mourinho chose to go hard after him, so we accepted the contract.
"Mourinho knows Eto'o quite well, as the two share a common past during their time at Inter."
Eto'o signed a one-year contract with Chelsea following his Anzhi Makhachkala exit, bringing an end to his spell as the world's highest-paid player - on a reported wage of €20 million per year.
Anzhi's billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov decided to significantly reduce the club's budget, putting star players such as Willian and Eto'o up for sale, with both players now plying their trade at Stamford Bridge.
As a result, the Dagestan side have cut their wage bill from €83 million to €21 million.
