Former Nigerian coach, Samson Siasia does not believe voodoo will
play any part in the outcome of Saturday’s 2013 African Nations
Championship (Chan) qualifying game between the Super Eagles and Ivory
Coast’s Elephants.
There have been reports that the Ivoirians may resort to
unconventional methods as they look to overturn a 4-1 first leg score
line.
Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi who played for Ivoirian clubs,
Stade d’Abidjan and Africa Sport between 1985 and 1986 knows the
Francophone nation well and lent credence to speculations making the
rounds that voodoo could be employed by the hosts.
““They (Ivoirians) don’t joke with football, so I won’t be surprised
if they revive their old habits of sprinkling animal blood in the
dressings rooms or even attempting to poison the food the players will
eat,” Keshi said on Friday.
Siasia however does not believe voodoo plays any role in the outcome
of matches and insists the Eagles will qualify for the Chan if they
play well.
“I do not believe (voodoo) plays any role in football. We must not
think about such things. Let’s just concentrate on ourselves and if we
play well, I believe we will get the desired result,” he told
supersport.com.
Nigeria has a comfortable lead going into the return leg on Saturday
but Siasia believes the Eagles must be cautious in their approach in
the return leg.
“A 4-1 win in the first leg means Nigeria has a big advantage but this is football where anything can happen.
“Whenever we attack, we must do so with intelligence. It will be
important (for Nigeria) to score because then they will need to score
five,” he added.
Nigeria has never qualified for the Chan and will make their debut
in South Africa next year if the Super Eagles do not lose by three clear
goals or more to the Elephants on Saturday.
